Season Beta took a quite long summer break in hot 🔥Las Vegas☀, but ROBORACE and we were not inactive during the summer. We were not racing on the real racetrack, but we did race – in simulation. And as you can imagine, the metaverse did not make it easy. 😵🤪

1st simulation challenge “Ghost Pursuit”

As the name indicates, we had a pursuit with ghost cars. The goal: being faster and if possible don’t hit the ghost cars. Easier said then done, some ghost collisions could just not be avoided. But all in all we managed quite well in two races.

2nd simulation challenge “In-Time”

The motto:
time is money
if you.lose(time):
your_mission.set_failed()

The goal: 9.55 km traffic sprint from a standing start within 8 minutes. The team with the most time left wins. But attention, hitting ghost cars and obstacles slows you down!

Yeah, what should we say, it went really well: 1st place for team ARG 🥳 including a spectacular finish with style.  See for yourself 👉

Even if these challenges did not officially count for Season Beta, we collected a lot of testing time, data and experience to be even more prepared when we are hitting the real racetrack again. And we can’t wait!

In Mission 4, round 9 and 10, ROBORACE Season Beta was pushing to new limits by introducing ghost cars. OK,  it’s hard to call them cars.

Each overtake of  a ghost “car” gave -20 seconds to the result time. But easier said than done, some ghost crashes could not be avoided and that meant +30 seconds penalty per crash.

So, the challenge was quite tough. Whereas in round 9 most of our overtakes resulted in a crash, we performed some really nice overtakes in round 10. It was quite a tough challenge, but it was a big step towards racing with multiple autonomous cars on the track. One thing is for sure: there is many more racing action to come!

In the overall competition, we could catch up to ARRIVAL and we currently share the place 2 with them. The next races will be a tough fight! 💪

Roborace Mission 3.1 Rounds 7&8 were successfully completed!

But what a thrill in round 8: all teams have a timeslot of 20 minutes in which the race has to be started. And first it really did not look good as the car just didn’t start due to localization problems.

But then, only 11 seconds before the time out, it finally drove off and completed the 5 racing laps successfully. What an excitement! 😵 😅

Roborace SeasonBeta Round 5&6 successfully finished at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway! 🥳

Despite a short shock in round 5, when the car stopped during lap 3 😲 due to a communication error on Roborace side, we could successfully re-start and finish the race on 3rd place 🥉. Yes, we hit a few obstacles (but don’t they look cute? 😉).

In Round 6, it went even better, no re-start and less hit obstacles, but more collected collectables. 😁 2nd place in Round 6 🥈

So the rounds went quite round for us: definitely a reason to dance 👇

Hackathon #3: the first simulated head-to-head of the Indy Autonomous Challenge: Two teams on the track racing against each other. ARG was paired with WUT Driverless –Warsaw Univ of Technology.

What was the task?

  • Complete 5 laps without incidents & staying in the bounds of the track
  • Two rounds of racing, one with each team in pole position
  • Each team’s final score is the total time for Round 1 and Round 2

Result

10th place: good performance with potential for improvement. 😉

Last week was pretty eventful for ARG as Roborace Season Beta started into its second event at Thruxton circuit (UK).

What was the challenge?

In this event, the Roborace Metaverse was integrated for the first time— a mixed reality that blends the virtual and physical worlds together. Whereas the car is racing on the physical racetrack, virtual objects come in that have either to be avoided or collected, bringing penalty time or time credit.

Two rounds and a lot of issues

On the two racing rounds, not everything worked as planned. It started in round one with Acronis SIT crashing their car even before the start line. Also for ARG, the round did not go round. The car performed a safety stop in front of a flickering obstacle in the second lap.

In the end, only 2 out of 6 teams completed the race. So it could only get better for round 2… and it did.

ARG decided, due to the flickering issues in round 1, to completely ignore the metaverse objects and just go for speed by driving a static race line. The strategy worked: 3 completed laps and, therefore, a successfully complete round 2: Watch our race here!

Even though it was only enough to become fifth, the ARG team is proud of their performance and fully motivated to build upon that. And of course ARG congratulates the ARRIVAL team, winner of both rounds, on an incredible race!

Next time ARG will go for speed and beat the metaverse. Let’s see what is possible!

Last week was very intense for the ARG team. With the 2nd IAC Hackathon and Roborace Season Beta event 1, the team was more than busy.

The week started with the IAC Hackathon, the first competitive step of the Indy Autonomous Challenge.

The challenges:

  • Find the optimum race line and achieve the fastest lap round
  • Dabble in the boundary of disaster and avoid an evasive maneuver during overtaking

The successful completion of these challenges brought ARG one step closer to the final race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in October 2021. Indianapolis, here we come!

However, there was not much time to celebrate as parallel by completing the Hackathon, Roborace Season Beta went into its first round: with the race car, the Devbot 2.0, at the Anglesey Circuit in Wales and the ARG team participating remotely from Graz.

Unfortunately, it did not go as planned. Bad weather conditions already reduced the track testing time for the teams. When finally, the ARG team, as first of all teams, started the race, the Devbot 2.0 performed an emergency stop in the very first corner.

What happened?

The car received a message from race control to perform an emergency stop, and of course, the Devbot 2.0 followed the request.

But who initiated this message?

No one!

It was a phantom message that should have never been sent to the car—the consequence: cancellation of the whole event.

For the sake of safety, we fully support the decision of Roborace to cancel the race. As Season Beta is a developing season, such incidents have to be expected. The ARG team is confident to learn a lot from this failure and will be back for the next race even stronger.

The ARG team is ready to compete in the Indy Autonomous Challenge round 2. The task is to demonstrate the ability to automate a passenger vehicle via submitting a video of our supplied and programmed automated Passenger Vehicle that shows a range of automated driving functions (i.e., left and right turns, acceleration, and deceleration to a complete stop). We think we completed this challenge quite well and cannot wait to switch from a passenger vehicle to a race car to speed up on the race track. But have a look for yourself!
